I recently got a message from someone who also grew up in a conservative evangelical environment. They've been out of the church for years, but they talked about how lonely and disoriented they still are. It's not because they've made no new friends, it's because none of their friends understand the experience. "My secular friends don't understand how hard it was and my conservative friends don't understand how isolating it was."
